1946 CJ2A from Toledo to the Philippines to the USA

by Roger Gordon
(Phoenix, Az)

My '46 CJ2A #13241 was purchased by the Navy and served in the Philippines in 1946.

Purchased by a Navy Chief Petty Officer for $12, and returned to the US, it was driven for 18 years. It was then purchased by a friend of mine who drove it for 38 years.

I purchased the Jeep in early 2006. Six years later and with lots of time and money the Jeep has been restored to the original factory condition including the color from the factory to the Navy where it was painted gray.

I enjoyed the work and now at 79 I will sell my Jeep.

Larry's Comment: Nice looking restoration, Roger. The CJ2A is becoming quite rare these days.

I can't tell for certain from your photos, but your Willys appears to have the column shifter, which is even more of a rarity for this model.

Thanks for sharing some of the history of this fine restoration.

I will clarify Larry's comment about the column shift.

Column shifts on the CJ2A were instituted when the Willys Co. began building civilian Jeeps in 1945 after WW II. The column shift continued into the 1946 run and was ended with serial number 38221.

My personal opinion on why the column shift was dropped is that Willys was probably sorry they ever used it. The floor shift was much simpler to manufacture and use. The R&D, manufacture and assembly of the parts for the column shift was expensive and cumbersome compared to the floor shift.

The same transmission (T-90) was used for both applications.

Larry's Reply: Thanks for the clarification, Roger.
