I cannot profess to being an off road expert. I have owned two Ford Explorers, a 1993 and a 2004. The '93 was more "off roady" than the '04.
I bought an '11 Liberty 70th anniversary edition and I believe it is as capable as my '93 explorer was. Anything can get stuck as witnessed on "Alaskan off road warriors". Ground clearance is good on the Liberty, and with 4WD Low lock, it is more than capable of climbing steep grades. Time and opportunity will tell how good or bad this vehicle is off road, but for my purposes, this Liberty fits the bill with everything I wanted in a 4WD vehicle, much more than an Escape, Rav4, or Rogue.
For logging trails on the Gunflint trail, or going through the rough trail in Monument valley, this vehicle will do what I want. I like everything about it so far and will let you know what I do not like.
